    * Title: Responding to Hate Crime: Workshop

    * Date & Time: Wednesday, November 30, 2016, 16:15 pm ~ 18:15 pm

    * Venue: N206, Baekyang Hall(Building 310, 백양관)

    * Speaker: Prof. Clifton R. Emery, School of Social Welfare, Yonsei University

    * Background:

    - The post-election wave of hate crime is not news to those who closely follow major news outlets (cf. Lichtblau, New York Times, 11-14-2016) or who are plugged into Facebook. Facebook users have, since last Tuesday, virtually witnessed a spate of hate crimes and violent threats against Korean and Chinese Americans, women, Jews, Muslims, blacks, Hispanics, immigrants, professors, members of the LGBT community, and members of any minority community targeted by hate groups. These crimes have created consternation and fear among millions of Americans that belong to these groups. Some crimes have also been committed against supporters of Donald Trump. Americans are not taking these crimes lying down, however. Tens of thousands of people have now adopted wearing a safety pin to indicate that they will intervene against harassment and hate crime that they witness. There is a term for this kind of intervention: informal social control.

    * Workshop Contents:

    - This workshop aims to (1) help international students to process the election, (2) teach them ways to stay safe if they witness a hate crime and decide to intervene, and (3) teach them how to intervene effectively. The workshop does not require a participant commitment to intervene against hate crime. Rather, it focuses on how participants should prepare and which methods might work best if they decide that they must. The workshop is open to all, regardless of political persuasion, nationality, or any other ascriptive characteristic. The workshop will last about 2 hours and will feature discussion, airing of concerns, strategies for coping, strategies for responding to hate crime, and role-play.

    *Participants: All international students both degree-seeking and exchange students. Students from the US are particularly invited to participate.

    * Limitation: 40 seats, First come, first served.
