  • Dear Spring 2024 SAY Program exchange and visiting students,

     

    Greetings from Yonsei OIA,
     
    For those who have received their D-2 Alien Registration Card(ARC) from the Immigration Office, you will be automatically registered to Korean National Health Insurance(NHIS) in accordance to Korean law.
    Please refer to the below information and contact Korean NHIS directly regarding any inquiries regarding NHIS (to check whether you have been registered, how you can receive the bill, and/or how to be exempt from it if you are eligible, etc).

    1. Who is required to register for NHI?

    Foreigners who reside in Korea for more than 6 months (auto-subscription)

    Visa Types

    2. Benefits of NHI

    Benefits of NHI

    Details

    Partial payment from receiving medical services

    Inpatient services: 20% of medical fee

    Outpatient services: 30~60% of medical fee

    Non-covered: 100%

    Health check-ups

    Provided once every 2 years based on birth year

     2023: provided for odd-number birth year

    Easy access to services

    Easy access to medical services at hospital, clinic, dentist, pharmacy etc.

     

     

    3. Insurance Fee and Payment Period

    a. 2024 NHI fee for foreign students: 75,490KRW/month

    b. Payment deadline: Insurance fee for next month must be paid by 25th of this month

    1) ex. Insurance fee for October must be paid by September 25th

    2) Late fee will be charged if payment is not made by the deadline, and any medical fee issued during the unpaid period will not be refunded, even after paying later.

     

    4. NHI Payment Notification

    a. A monthly payment notification is sent to the registered home address (delivered around 15th of each month)

    b. Notification method: Post or electronic (email or mobile phone)

    c. MUST apply separately for electronic notification and change of bill delivery address

     

    4-1. How to Apply for NHI Electronic Notification

    You can apply either via the NHIS customer center, NHIS App or the NHIS website.

    ※ You need your mobile phone number for personal authentication.

    (Available if set up with alien registration number.)

    4-2. How to Apply for Changing the NHI Bill Delivery Address

    You can apply for changing the NHI bill delivery address either via NHIS customer center, NHIS App or the NHIS website.

    You need your mobile phone number for personal authentication.

    (Available if set up with alien registration number.)

    5-1. How to Apply for NHI Automatic Transfer

    Automatic transfer service automatically deposits your monthly NHI fee from your registered bank account on the 25th of each month.

    You can apply either via NHIS customer center, NHIS App or the NHIS website.

    ※ You need your mobile phone number and bank account for personal authentication. (Available if set up with alien registration number.)

    6. Limitations on late/non-payment

    a. Limited health insurance benefits from medical services

    1) All medical fee occurred during the overdue period must be paid 100% by the student, and will not be reimbursed even after paying the insurance fee.

    b. Disadvantages on applying for permission of stay (restrictions on visa extensions)
